MICHEL-ANGELO Michel-Angelo Buonarroti (Michel-Ange) est né à Chiuzi près Arezzo (Toscane, Italie) en 1475 et mort à Rome en 1564. Très jeune il dessinait déjà ou s'apprenait à manier le marteau et le ciseau. À treize ans, élève de Ghirlandajo, il entra ensuite à l'école de sculpture fondée par Laurent de Médicis dans les Jardins de Saint-Marc. À vingt ans, il fit sa première sculpture: l'Amour endormi, puis à Rome son Bacchus et sa Pietà. Les Médicis le prirent sous leur protection, et les différents Papes, Jules II, Léon X, Clément VII et Paul III lui donnèrent de grands travaux à exécuter: Sculptures, monuments et fresques décoratives. La puissance de Michel-Ange est immense, «son individualité s'accentue à chaque œuvre, sa gigantesque imagination s'applique à des formes élevées et originales, c'est un géant qui marche sans connaître ni incertitude, ni faiblesse». LE PLAFOND DE LA CHAPELLE SIXTINE, commencé en 1508. Michel-Ange y trouve de grands espaces pour y étaler la puissance de son imagination et de son talent. On y voit les principaux morceaux suivants: «Création de la Lumière, du Soleil et de la Lune»; «Dieu planant sur les eaux»; «Création d'Adam, d'Eve»; «Le premier péché»; «l'Expulsion du Paradis»; «Le Sacrifice de Noë»; «Le Déluge»; «Les Prophètes et les Sibylles». C'est le plus prodigieux effort qu'ait enfanté l'esprit et le travail humains. À partir de 1534 Michel-Ange peignit l'immense fresque du «jugement dernier» également dans la Chapelle Sixtine à Rome. Église Saint-Pierre in Vinculis, à Rome. La figure du «Moïse» est l'intérêt principal de ce monument pour lequel Michel-Ange fit les «Deux Captifs» (1505) qui sont au Musée du Louvre à Paris. LA PIETÀ à Saint-Pierre de Rome. UN CHRIST à l'Église de la Minerva à Rome. LA VIERGE ET L'ENFANT à Bruges. «Sous les mains de Michel-Ange le marbre ne traduit pas seulement les idées et les sentiments: il vit». Comme Architecte, Michel-Ange construisit les «fortifications de Florence» et fit les plans pour la «Coupole et la Façade de Saint-Pierre de Rome».
