From time immemorial the domestic hearth has been the theme of optimists and poets, who have lavished on it the most endearing words, and have associated it with their most delightful thoughts. The fireplace has always been, and always will be, the happiest rallying-place of the family. It has been aptly called the "sun in the house," and its ruddy glow, its sociable warmth, and cheering qualities have not been lost sight of in the development of æsthetic art as applied to home decoration during recent years, and the chimney-piece has been made, with most excellent results, the central part of the decorative scheme. To all home-builders there comes the thought, "We must have at least one or two open fireplaces." How natural the thought, and what great pleasures in even the anticipation. As to the choice of materials for the Fireplace Mantel, nothing has ever been used that meets all requirements so completely as our Ornamental Unglazed Brick. The essential idea of a fireplace is "Brick" from beginning to end, and the practice of using a brick facing with a wooden mantel around it (a practice which is now passing by) has only been a sort of makeshift, employed because Ornamental Brick of new and artistic patterns were not obtainable, our Company being the first to make them. There is always so much woodwork in a room, anyway, so why overcrowd the eye with a "mantelful" more? The glazed tiles which were formerly used in mantels were found to have such a cold, hard, and glassy look that they have been relegated to bathrooms, elevator shafts, sanitary uses, etc., to such an extent that few people now care to consider their use about the fireside. Our Brick Mantels are the best kind to have. The bricks are patterned after the most artistic Greek and Renaissance designs, and the appearance of them when set in mantels is that of carved work. The joints between the courses of brick serve to break up any tendency to a heavy or monumental effect, and the general appearance of our mantels is exceedingly soft, rich, and harmonious. They have a pleasing effect which the eye never tires of. They have the stamp of character, and their simplicity and modest elegance lend a particular charm to the surroundings. The designs in this book were all prepared by a well-known Boston architect whose extended European travel rendered him peculiarly fitted for the work, and the designs embody many of the best ideas of the best brickwork of England and the Continent. Some of the designs are purposely shown in the architect's original pen-and-ink drawings, while the others are shown as photographs furnished by our customers. We make the brick in six colors; viz., red, cream, buff, pink, brown, and gray: thus giving you the choice of a color which will harmonize with or contrast properly with any scheme of surrounding decoration. The sizes of many of the designs can be altered to fit a required space. In shipping the brick, we pack them carefully in sawdust, in barrels, and with every order we furnish an architect's scale drawing and directions, and any intelligent brick-mason can easily set the mantels up. The prices given in this book are net, and include packing and delivery to cars or steamer at Boston. In comparing prices of other kinds of mantels with our prices, please bear in mind that to the other prices you must add the expense of the brick or other material for the side linings, the back, the under-fire, and the hearth, while our prices include all these. Ours are far better than any other kinds, but still they don't cost any more. Our mantels are suitable for any kind of a room, the selection depending upon the size, the color, the amount of ornamentation, etc. They are substantial and durable, and look just as well in after years as when new. It is folly to build a house and put in articles that are passing out of use. The more permanent furnishings should be of the newest designs. That means that the Fireplace Mantels should be of our Ornamental Brick. No other kind combines so many good, practical, and artistic features. Of all kinds, ours are the most unique, the fittest, and the best. SKETCH No. 1. A mantel with an arched fireplace and a niche above it. The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision of this agreement shall not void the remaining provisions. 1.F.6. INDEMNITY - You agree to indemnify and hold the Foundation, the trademark owner, any agent or employee of the Foundation, anyone providing copies of Project Gutenberg™ electronic works in accordance with this agreement, and any volunteers associated with the production, promotion and distribution of Project Gutenberg™ electronic works, harmless from all liability, costs and expenses, including legal fees, that arise directly or indirectly from any of the following which you do or cause to occur: (a) distribution of this or any Project Gutenberg™ work, (b) alteration, modification, or additions or deletions to any Project Gutenberg™ work, and (c) any Defect you cause. Section 2. Information about the Mission of Project Gutenberg™ Project Gutenberg™ is synonymous with the free distribution of electronic works in formats readable by the widest variety of computers including obsolete, old, middle-aged and new computers. It exists because of the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and donations from people in all walks of life. Volunteers and financial support to provide volunteers with the assistance they need are critical to reaching Project Gutenberg™’s goals and ensuring that the Project Gutenberg™ collection will remain freely available for generations to come. In 2001, the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation was created to provide a secure and permanent future for Project Gutenberg™ and future generations. To learn more about the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation and how your efforts and donations can help, see Sections 3 and 4 and the Foundation information page at www.gutenberg.org. Section 3. Information about the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation The Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational corporation organized under the laws of the state of Mississippi and granted tax exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service. The Foundation’s EIN or federal tax identification number is 64-6221541. Contributions to the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation are tax deductible to the full extent permitted by U.S. federal laws and your state’s laws. The Foundation’s business office is located at 809 North 1500 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84116, (801) 596-1887. Email contact links and up to date contact information can be found at the Foundation’s website and official page at www.gutenberg.org/contact Section 4. Information about Donations to the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation Project Gutenberg™ depends upon and cannot survive without widespread public support and donations to carry out its mission of increasing the number of public domain and licensed works that can be freely distributed in machine-readable form accessible by the widest array of equipment including outdated equipment. Many small donations ($1 to $5,000) are particularly important to maintaining tax exempt status with the IRS. The Foundation is committed to complying with the laws regulating charities and charitable donations in all 50 states of the United States. Compliance requirements are not uniform and it takes a considerable effort, much paperwork and many fees to meet and keep up with these requirements. We do not solicit donations in locations where we have not received written confirmation of compliance. To SEND DONATIONS or determine the status of compliance for any particular state visit www.gutenberg.org/donate. While we cannot and do not solicit contributions from states where we have not met the solicitation requirements, we know of no prohibition against accepting unsolicited donations from donors in such states who approach us with offers to donate. International donations are gratefully accepted, but we cannot make any statements concerning tax treatment of donations received from outside the United States. U.S. laws alone swamp our small staff. Please check the Project Gutenberg web pages for current donation methods and addresses. Donations are accepted in a number of other ways including checks, online payments and credit card donations. To donate, please visit: www.gutenberg.org/donate. Section 5. General Information About Project Gutenberg™ electronic works Professor Michael S. Hart was the originator of the Project Gutenberg™ concept of a library of electronic works that could be freely shared with anyone. For forty years, he produced and distributed Project Gutenberg™ eBooks with only a loose network of volunteer support. Project Gutenberg™ eBooks are often created from several printed editions, all of which are confirmed as not protected by copyright in the U.S. unless a copyright notice is included. Thus, we do not necessarily keep eBooks in compliance with any particular paper edition. Most people start at our website which has the main PG search facility: www.gutenberg.org. This website includes information about Project Gutenberg™, including how to make donations to the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation, how to help produce our new eBooks, and how to subscribe to our email newsletter to hear about new eBooks.
